Challenges in modern greenhouse horticulture

Water scarcity and rising costs

Freshwater is becoming scarcer and more expensive, especially in Southern Europe and the Middle East. Efficient water use is no longer a luxury—it determines whether your business is future-proof. Growers are looking for ways to make the most of every drop.

High energy prices

Heating and lighting are major expenses. The Grodan Low-Energy trial demonstrated that 40% energy savings are possible with precision measurement and targeted control. But to achieve this, you need to know exactly what's happening in your greenhouse.

Sensor fatigue among growers

Too much data, too little action. Many growers already have multiple sensor systems, but struggle with interpretation. Data should lead to concrete cultivation decisions—not more confusion. The trick is to measure what matters.

Climate change and more extreme weather

Summers are getting hotter, winters more unpredictable. This requires faster adjustments to your greenhouse climate. With the right monitoring points, you can anticipate instead of reacting – for a more stable growing environment and less stress for your crop.

Applying Plant Empowerment in Practice

The theory of Plant Empowerment—the balance between energy, water, and assimilates—sounds logical. But how do you apply it in your greenhouse? That requires the right measurements in the right places. And insight into what those numbers mean for your daily management.

Systems that don't talk to each other

Your climate computer, your crop registration, your external sensors—all valuable, but not always well-integrated. Manually transferring data takes time and increases the risk of errors. Seamless integration is essential for data-driven cultivation.

01

Klimaat
Arrow
Cross

Technische specificaties

  • Temperatuurbereik: -20°C tot +60°C, nauwkeurigheid ±0,3°C
  • Luchtvochtigheid: 0-100% RH, nauwkeurigheid ±2%
  • CO2: 0-5000 ppm, nauwkeurigheid ±30 ppm
  • Meetfrequentie: instelbaar, standaard elke 15 minuten

Technische specificaties:

  • Meetbereik PAR: 0-2000 µmol/m²/s
  • Nauwkeurigheid: ±5%
  • Spectrale respons: 400-700nm (PAR-bereik)
  • Meetfrequentie: instelbaar, standaard elke 15 minuten
  • Batterijduur: tot 10 jaar (bij meetinterval van 5 minuten)
  • Geschikt voor: natuurlijk licht én LED-belichting

Plantgewicht
Arrow
Cross

Praktische voordelen:

  • Watergift precies afstemmen op plantbehoefte
  • Groeipatronen herkennen en voorspellen
  • Vroegtijdig stress signaleren (droogte, ziektes)
  • Drainage minimaliseren (tot 8% volgens Grodan-proef)

Technische specificaties:

  • Meetbereik: 0-30 kg (verschillende capaciteiten beschikbaar)
  • Nauwkeurigheid: ±5 gram
  • Meetfrequentie: instelbaar, tot elke 5 minuten
  • Geschikt voor: teeltgoten, potplanten, substraatblokken
  • Voeding: netvoeding (continu meten vereist hogere capaciteit)
  • Draadloos: data via gateway naar kasbesturingssysteem

Bodem
Arrow
Cross

Praktische voordelen:

  • Voorkom over- of onderbewatering
  • Stuur EC voor optimale voedingsopname
  • Worteltemperatuur in de gaten houden
  • Drainage-EC monitoren voor hergebruik gietwater

Technische specificaties:

  • VWC-bereik: 0-100% volumetrisch watergehalte
  • EC-bereik: 0-10 mS/cm, nauwkeurigheid ±0,1 mS/cm
  • Temperatuur: -20°C tot +60°C, nauwkeurigheid ±0,5°C
  • Meetfrequentie: instelbaar, standaard elke 15 minuten
  • Batterijduur: tot 10 jaar (bij meetinterval van 5 minuten)
  • Geschikt voor: steenwol, kokos, potgrond, andere substraten

Frequently Asked Questions
General
How big should my greenhouse be to use sensors effectively?

There's no minimum greenhouse size. Even smaller growers (from 5,000 m²) benefit from precision measurement, especially with high-value crops like tomatoes or potted plants. It's all about measuring the right spots—not sensors everywhere, but strategically placed.

Do the sensors also work in existing greenhouses?

Yes, the sensors are designed for retrofitting. Wireless means no wiring or major structural changes. Installation usually takes just a few hours, and you're operational the same day. Older greenhouses are also suitable.

What happens if a sensor fails?

Sensors have a long lifespan (battery life up to 10 years), but if anything goes wrong, you'll see it immediately in your system: no data means an alert. Replacement is easy – sensors are plug-and-play, so swapping them out is quick.

Integration & Systems
Does this work with my current climate computer?

Wireless Value integrates with all major greenhouse control systems: Priva, Hoogendoorn IIVO, Ridder, Source.ag, and LetsGrow. If you have a different system, please contact us – API connections are available for most platforms.

Can I also see data without a climate computer?

Yes, you always have access to your data via Wireless Value Online. This web platform displays graphs, trends, and analyses—independent of your cash management system. Ideal for external consultants or if you want to monitor remotely.

Physically installing sensors and the base station takes a few hours. The API connection to your climate computer is usually active within a day. You can see data immediately, but it takes a few weeks of cultivation data before you can truly recognize and optimize patterns.

What if I want to expand to more sensors?

The system is modular. Start small (for example, one department) and expand when you're convinced. Adding additional sensors is easy—no new base station required (up to 1,000 meters of range); sensors connect automatically.

Technical
How accurate are the measurements?

Temperature: ±0.3°C, humidity: ±2% RH, CO2: ±30 ppm, EC: ±0.1 mS/cm. This is professional accuracy, sufficient for precise crop control. Sensors are calibrated and tested according to industry standards.

How often do the sensors measure?

The default setting is every 15 minutes, but this is adjustable. For climate and light, 15 minutes is more than sufficient. For plant weight, you can measure more frequently (up to every 5 minutes) to track watering in real time. A higher measurement frequency does mean a shorter battery life.

What is the range of the sensors?

The base station has a range of up to 1,000 meters with a clear line of sight. In a greenhouse with crops, screens, and other structures, this range is less, but usually sufficient for the entire greenhouse. For longer distances, you can add extenders to extend the range.

How often should I replace the batteries?

With a standard measurement interval (every 15 minutes), batteries last up to 10 years. With more intensive measurements (every 5 minutes), the battery life is shorter, but still several years. You'll receive a notification when batteries need replacing—no surprises.

Financial
What are the costs for such a system?

The investment depends on the number of sensors and your specific situation. A starter set (base station + 5-10 sensors) is affordable for most companies. Request a quote for a calculation based on your greenhouse and cultivation goals. It often pays for itself in water savings and improved yields.

Is there a subscription or license fee?

Yes, there's an annual license for Wireless Value Online (€27.50 per base station) and data usage (€0.11 per 1,000 samples). There's also an annual integration fee of €350 for integration with greenhouse management systems. This covers software updates, cloud storage, and support.

What is the payback period?

This depends on your situation, but growers often see a payback period of 1-2 years through:

  • Water savings (more efficient use, less drainage)
  • Energy savings (more precise heating and lighting)
  • Higher yields (better growing conditions)
  • Reduced losses (early detection of problems)
Support & Service
Will I receive training during installation?
